چکیده

A novel method is developed to merge and disband groups in IP Multicast while retaining the original setup of their groups. It extends the semantic ofjoining or leaving a membershipfrom discrete members to group members in IP network. It has minimal impact on existing multicast trees and does not affect the operations of multicast routing protocols and the Internet Group Management (IGMP). It incurs lower processing overheads by maintaining the merge status of groups at the network level instead of storing the status at application level. A prototype router and testbed have been implemented successfully to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed solution and for performance evaluation. The proposed group connection management fills the necessary gap in the existing IP Multicast architecture, where the lack of graceful merging and disbanding methods present an obstacle for more creative and complex usage of group applications.

Cost analysis and optimization for IP multicast group management

This paper studies the system parameters that affect the total cost of managing the multicast group on a router. A Petri net model is first proposed to describe the states and transitions of the multicast group management. Based on this model, a delayed vacation queue, extended from a simple M/M/1 queue, is used to analyze the total cost of the multicast group management under various system co...

IP Multicast over Token-Ring Local Area Networks

IP multicasting provides a means of transmitting IP datagrams to a group of hosts. A group IP address is used as the destination address in the IP datagram as documented in STD 5, RFC 1112 [1]. These group addresses, also referred to as Class D addresses, fall in the range from 224.0.0.0 to 239.255.255.255. A standard method of mapping IP multicast addresses to media types such as ethernet and ...

Multicast for Small Conferences

This paper describes a concept to support scalable multicast communications for small audio / video conferencing groups in the Internet. The solution presented in this paper is based on extensions of IPv6 and the session description protocol (SDP). A goal of the concept called Multicast for Small Conferences (MSC) is the smooth deployment in the Internet. 1. Scalable Multicast Techniques Teleco...

Host Multicast: A Framework for Delivering Multicast To End Users

While the advantages of multicast delivery over multiple unicast deliveries is undeniable, the deployment of the IP multicast protocol has been limited to “islands” of network domains under single administrative control. Deployment of inter-domain multicast delivery has been slow due to both technical and administrative reasons. In this paper we propose a Host Multicast Tree Protocol (HMTP) tha...

A Novel Location Management Scheme and Routing Protocol for Group Communications in Cellular IP Networks

In this paper, a novel location management scheme called Distributed Group Tracking (DGT) for group communications in Cellular IP networks is proposed. In DGT, Base stations track each member of a group and build a share multicast routing tree called DGT-Tree for the group in a distributed manner. Transmission of multicast packets among group members is along the group’s DGT-Tree. Simulation st...
